special safety precautions. The Chalwyn diesel engine safety product range includes automatic over speed air and fuel shut down valves, air pressure, oil pressure, manual and electrically operated air intake shut down valves, flameproof alternators, exhaust spark arrestors and complete engine monitoring and automatic shut down systems. Engine air intake positive shut off valves If flammable gas or vapour is drawn into the intake of a diesel engine it acts as an additional ungoverned fuel supply. When this occurs the only certain way to stop the engine is by the operation of an air intake shut down valve. Failure to stop the engine can result in uncontrolled engine overspeed followed by mechanical failure or flash back from the intake resulting in ignition of the surrounding flammable atmosphere. Automatic reset types - Automatic overspeed shut down - D series (Bendix, mini, & spindle) - Simple cost effective fully automatic engine overspeed protection valves requiring no mechanical or electrical connections. Models available to meet virtually all popular combinations of intake pipe sizes and engine rating. - Automatic overspeed shut down valve combined with engine air cleaner - DF series - Automatic overspeed with remote manual positive shut down valves - D-AM series - Automatic overspeed with remote manual positive shut down valves combined with air cleaner - DF-AM series - Automatic overspeed or air pressure to shut down - TPZ and D-AP series - Automatic overspeed, manual or air pressure to shut down - TPZ and D-AMP series - Air pressure to open - PVX series - Air pressure to shut down - PVX series - Solenoid energized to open - SVX series Manual reset types - Manual shut down - MVX series - Slim, light weight, 3", 5" and 8" bore butterfly valves complete with reset lever to latch in the open position and the option of either a valve-mounted stop button or a remote stop button with a cable connection to the valve. These valves may be mounted between flanges or can be supplied fitted with hose adaptors selected from a range of 28 size options. - Manual or air pressure shut down - MPX series - Solenoid energized to shut down - SVX series Manual start override types - Manual or de-energize solenoid to shut down - SVX series - Slim, light weight, 3" and 5" bore, 12 volt and 24 volt butterfly valves. Available as either EExe or safe area equipment. Complete with cable and lever start override to hold the valve open prior to powering the solenoid. Shut down occurs on loss of power to the solenoid or by operation of the manual shut down control. | Fuel shutdown valves - When used in conjunction with the appropriate Chalwyn D, X or Z intake air valve, the FSX-100 ensures simultaneous shut down of both engine air and fuel supply. Special kits are available to assist in making the required connection between the intake air and fuel shut down valves. - The LST-200 automatically closes down the engine fuel supply on loss of an oil (or air) pressure signal. Suitable for engine types with fuel supply pipes up to about 10mm (3/8 inch) in diameter. |

| Diesel engine exhaust spark arrestors Diesel Engine exhaust spark arrestors are a basic but key safety feature for both hazardous area and lower risk diesel engine applications such as forestry or agriculture where a stray spark may cause ignition of combustible material. Virtually all legislation with regard to operating a diesel engine in a hazardous area includes a mandatory requirement to fit a properly tested and approved exhaust spark arrestor. |

| Engine mounted flameproof alternators Standard automotive type alternators are a continuous potential source of ignition when operated in hazardous atmospheres where combustible concentrations of gas, vapour or dusts may exist. To overcome this, Chalwyn market a range of ATEX approved flameproof alternators designed specifically to mount on diesel engines as direct replacements for the standard alternator. |

| Diesel engine monitoring and automatic shutdown
systems When a diesel engine is operated in a hazardous area or in an application where special precautions are justified, it is often a general requirement that the engine automatically shuts down if its speed, critical temperatures or oil pressure fall outside of predetermined limits. It is widely recognized that the best method to achieve such an emergency automatic shut down is by closure of an engine intake shut down valve. To comply with EN 1834-1:2000 both the engine air intake and diesel fuel supply must be shut down automatically in the event of engine overspeed. It must also be possible to operate the air shut down valve manually. |
