1-800-Goog-411 (1-800-466-4411) is a free business directory assistance call from any phone (including cellphones). Search by name or category. Better than $0.95 (Telus directory assistance call), $1.50 (Telus Mobility, Bell Mobility) or $1.75 (Rogers Wireless)
Register your phone number with Canada's national Do-Not-Call list to stop Telemarketers at www.lnnte-dncl.gc.ca or call 1-866-580-3625 from the landline, cellphone or fax number you want to be listed. One twist is the "Confirmation Code" you need to type in after looking at the image is case-sensitive.

File a complaint about a telemarketer once you are on the Do-Not-Call list.

Stop unaddressed junk mail by attaching a sticker to note that says "No ad mail" above your mail slot. Details about Canada Post's Consumer Choice program

The Canadian Marketing Association has a "Do Not Contact" service that may have some effect on addressed admail.
AppRiver SecureTide AppRiver is a spam and virus-filtering company. Continually updates their filters to catch the latest spam and scams. Dirt cheap ($1 per mailbox per month), easy to set up, easy to deal with, excellent tech support. Possibly Frontier's best IT investment.
Foxit Reader for PDFs The free Foxit PDF Reader is what Adobe Acrobat Reader used to be--an efficient way to view PDF files. It is 10% of the file size of Adobe Acrobat reader, loads quickly, reads all PDF formats, and seems to perform better than Adobe Acrobat Reader in most circumstances.
Get Adobe Acrobat Reader We use Adobe Acrobat Reader for many of our forms and specification sheets. Get it free from Adobe's website, and read PDF files in your web browser.
OpenOffice.Org OpenOffice.Org is a high quality, free, open-source, Microsoft Office-compatible suite of programs. It includes full-featured word processor, spreadsheet, drawing, presentation and accessory programs. We have found this package to be better designed and easier to use than MS Office.

Dekart Software Dekart Private Disk Light is a good freeware encryption program that keeps your private information private. They also sell versions with more features.
Google Earth Google Earth is a remarkable piece of free software. Point and zoom to anyplace on the planet that you want to explore. Google earth combines satellite images, aerial photos and Google's seach engine to give you a lot of information about any place on the planet. Zoom to a specific address. View driving directions and even fly along your route.

Sunbelt Software CounterSpy
Sunbelt Software's Vipre is a reasonably well-written piece of software that removes spyware. Free trial, and reasonably priced if you decide to keep it.
Sysinternals free Autoruns program shows you all the programs that automatically start when you fire up your computer. Some of the programs might surprise you. Some of them slow your computer. This helpful utility allows you to easily disable autostart items.
NTWind Software created TaskSwitchXP as a replacement for Window XP Alt-Tab task switcher. Displays previews of each task you have running on your computer. Well written, free software. Works only in Windows XP
Parted Magic utility Parted Magic is a well-written Linux application that allows an experienced user to resize Windows and Linux partitions without destroying data. Download the ISO image, burn it to a CD, then boot from the CD. Free, but donations are encouraged.
Xenu Link Sleuth Xenu Link Sleuth is a well-written Windows application that quickly checks all the links on a website. Tilman Hausherr is the author. Freeware, although he encourages you to support his favourite charities.
WinDirStat disk usage utility Windirstat tells you how your disk space is used. A well-written freeware program that reads a directory or entire disk, and presents disk usage graphically, in a treeview (like Windows Explorer), and by file type. Helpful for discovering why you no longer have any room on your hard disk.
JKDefrag JKDefrag is a disk defragmenter and optimizer for Windows 2000/2003/XP/Vista/2008/X64. It's a well-written, effective, and works on Windows Server. And it's free. It includes a GUI versions and command line versions for 32 bit and 64 bit Windows. You can schedule it using Windows Task Scheduler.
