John Deere engine distributors in our northern reaches offer these words of advice to help keep your engines in top-working order during the cold months.

"Avoid premature cylinder-liner erosion this winter by checking antifreeze levels and adding supplemental coolant additives. Antifreeze condition can be checked by dipping test strips into the coolant. These strips may be ordered through John Deere part number TY16175 (4 test strips)." --Bell Power Systems, Essex, Conn., USA

During cold weather, using ether sparingly. Too much ether will cause burnt pistons and possibly valve failure. Ether is extremely volatile and can be dangerous if overused. -- Eastcost Power Systems, Fredricton, NB

Avoid excessive idling, which does not allow the engine to operate at the recommended temperature. Excessive idling may also cause the cylinder liners to wash down with fuel and lose their lubricity. -- Diesel-Bec, Boisbriand, PQ

Propane block heaters are handy when temperatures fall below minus 10 degrees Farenheit (-23 degrees C). They heat up the coolant and circulate it, keeping the engine block warm. Shutter stats, mounted on the radiator housing, can also be used to keep engines running at the 180 degree operating temperature. -- Frontier Power Products, Edmonton, AB

Don't forget to switch to a lighter-grade engine oil during cold weather. Heavy-viscosity oil can place an additional load on the starter, battery, and battery cables. --E.C. Power Systems, Boise, ID, USA
